Our program for July 11th features local artist Betty Friedman, Professor of Art and Chair of the art department at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California. She will show images and talk about the creativity and beauty of handmade paper and intaglio printmaking from inspiration through the studio process to the final product. Her large prints merge the skills and demands of both printmaking and papermaking into a difficult and physically-challenging, yet rewarding, interaction.
She begins each summer by making paper, with the ritual of beating pulp, adding pigments to vats and couching sheets to dry outside. Besides stimulating her creative energy, it provides the raw material for the coming year of printing.
Her work is in both local and corporate collections as well as The Oakland Museum of California and Notre Dame de Namur University .
The meeting will be held in the Garden Room of the El Cerrito Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane, El Cerrito. The evening begins at 7:00 pm with social time and a “mini art show” of members’ work. A brief business meeting is held at 7:30, followed by the speaker.
El Cerrito Art Association meetings are open to the public, and visitors and new members are always welcome.
