Pablo Villicana-Lara presents at March 13 meeting

Our March 13 meeting will feature a painting demonstration by Pablo Villicaña-Lara, local award-winning watercolor artist and jurist.  His discovery, 20 years ago, of the tangible quality of light and clarity of color possible with watercolor compelled him to abandon all other media (oil, ceramics, pastel and textiles) to work exclusively in watercolor.

The heart of his image making has always been his love for his culture, color and spirituality. He says, “I was raised in both Mexican and American cultures; most of my paintings reflect my deep respect and connection to my Mexican Native heritage…and sometimes my quirky sense of humor.”

Bachelors of Fine Arts St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California

Karen Leoni Demonstrates Oil Painting

Karen Leoni will demonstrate oil painting at the El Cerrito Art Association meeting at 7:00 pm on Sept.12 in the Garden Room of the El Cerrito Community Center.

Karen paints outside to capture the essence of landscape. Her demo will focus on “showing atmospheric perspective” while painting from a photo.

She works in both oil and pastel, believes the one enhances the other, and states, “Painting allows me to closely examine nature, and I now notice everyday things that otherwise would have passed me by. Time slows down when you paint or sketch. It’s magical.” Karen feels very fortunate to live in California surrounded by magnificent landscapes, yet also finds exploring new places a constant source of inspiration.

Her works are in galleries in California and New York, as well as corporate and private collections across the U.S. and Italy. In addition, she has received numerous awards in various juried events, plein air competitions, and exhibits.

Her art education includes the Academy of Art University Masters program in Fine Arts.
