Sept 9: Stephen Vincent – Drawing Lecture 7 – 9 pm

Drawing Into and Out of The Haptic: On Paper and for Artist Books

Stephen Vincent, San Francisco artist, poet, editor, publisher and general all-around bibliophile provides the program at our next meeting. He will speak on how he got started drawing into and out of the Haptic, described as an artistic exploration flowing from sensory responses. The artist has recently returned from a six-month term as artist in residence at the Getty Museum and has published books on the first and last 100 days of the Obama Administration.  He will also bring some examples of this unique and sometimes puzzling artform.

The drawings are sometimes combined to form a book without text, just a story of their own to tell. Larger single sheets are drawn on richly textured and subtly colored handmade papers. Some have patterns and movement reminiscent of the Australian Aboriginal artists, who recorded what they called “the dreaming”. Smaller densely covered pages are often gathered together as accordion books.  This meditative art form by an engaging personality promises a unique evening of stimulating reflection and conversation.

We  meet each second Monday Feb – Nov in the Garden Room of the El Cerrito Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane El Cerrito 7 – 9 pm.  The public is welcome and there is no charge. www.elcerritoart.org
